Cell Therapy vs. Immunotherapy: What’s the Difference?

Today’s medical landscape is an exciting one. Extensive research into alternative therapeutic treatments has given rise to immunotherapies, regenerative medicines and more. For the layperson, understanding the differences among many of these innovative treatments can be difficult. There are a lot of new terms to know; for instance, if you watch the news or read the paper, you may recognize the words “cell therapy” and “immunotherapy,” but you might not understand what they really mean. Here’s a brief explanation of the two:

Cellular Therapy

Also called “cell therapy,” cellular therapy involves the harvesting of various types of human cells to “be used as part of a therapy or treatment for a variety of diseases and conditions.”  A great number of cellular therapies make use of stem cells. However, other types of cells can be used for cellular therapy, as well, such as red blood cells (RBCs), immune cells (like lymphocytes and dendritic cells) and islet cells. Indeed, some of the most common cellular therapies are blood transfusions, including those that transfer RBCs, white blood cells (WBCs) and/or platelets from one donor to another. You also may have heard about bone marrow transplants, a lifesaving treatment for many blood cancers, anemia and immune deficiency disorders: this is another type of cellular therapy. In addition to these well established applications, the last few decades of research has shown the promise of using cellular therapy to facilitate the regeneration of other types of tissues, as well. Like cellular therapy, immunotherapy uses biological material to help heal the body. And while cellular therapy has been proven effective in treating a variety of diseases, infections and cancers, immunotherapy has traditionally been used to treat specific forms of cancer (although research is starting to verify the use of immunotherapy for other conditions now, too).

There are several types of immunotherapy; each uses a patient’s own immune system either to attack specific types of cancerous cells or to boost his or her immunity as a whole to facilitate a generic but stronger immune response against them. One of the most common types of immunotherapy is called “adoptive cell therapy” and utilizes T-cells to help the patient fight certain lymphomas and leukemias. In this way, immunotherapy and cellular therapy converge with similar effect. On the other hand, though, immunotherapy can also include cytokine therapy, a type of treatment that relies on interferons and interleukins (not cells) to trigger an immune response against particular cancers when injected into a patient.

Obesity At All-Time High as Physicians, Healthcare Professionals Strained

According to a report published by The New England Journal of Medicine last week, one-third of the world’s population is overweight. ⅓ of the global population is roughly 2.5 billion individuals. Additionally, the report stated that 711.4 million people are obese. Both numbers have increased dramatically in the past decade.

Data from 68.5 million individuals over a 35 year period, 1980 to 2015, was used to get the recent results. Over that 35 year period, throughout 70 countries, the percentage of individuals considered obese doubled. The report also noted an increase in childhood obesity. Overall, globally, there were 4 million deaths as a result of an individual being either overweight or obese.

Not surprisingly, the United States took first place with the highest prevalence of obesity worldwide. 35% of Americans are considered overweight.

Obesity has been a concern among Americans for decades. However, even though healthcare professionals have linked obesity to diabetes, heart disease, and death, Americans are becoming more overweight and unhealthy. This trend is no longer American. Globally, obesity is trending upwards. This is likely due to developing countries obtaining new foodstuff high in fat and artificial ingredients.

A rising prevalence of obesity and overweight individuals is adding to the already strained and overworked community of healthcare professionals. In the developed world, there is expected to be a shortage of doctors and other healthcare professionals over the next few decades. Fueled by global aging and a higher prevalence of obese individuals, the shortage is only set to get worse.

It’s that time of the year again.  It’s hot, it’s muggy, and the days are long.  School’s out and kids aren’t in classes.  However, in less than two months, kids and teens will return to school and will be expected to be able to complete new coursework.  For high school students, this coming school year could be the first you in which they will take the ACT, SAT, or some other placement test.  Your child might think they know best, telling you that they’ll do fine in the fall.  However, it’s important to make sure your child will be ahead of the curve this academic year.

Easing into the next school year is always somewhat challenging.  However, for many students, the new coursework could prove even more challenging than usual.  This is especially true of grade-schoolers beginning grammar courses, middle schoolers beginning algebra, and high school students taking on an increased workload.
